Second half-term of Summer homework.

Homework this term half term will be similar to last term, so we have some more activities which link to our books and themes. We hope you enjoy these activities with your child. We want you to have fun and do lots of talking to help your child learn some new words.

Please complete one activity a week with your child and tick it off the activity sheet in your child’s homework bag. Please do not complete more than 2 activities a week, otherwise you will run out! Your child will also receive a Maths homework each week.

Do let us know how the activity went. Photos of any games played will be displayed or talked about at carpet time. If you have any ideas you think we should share, or some way of making the activity better, please let us know.

For this half of summer term, we are finding out about how things grow. We are also visiting a farm for our school trip.

Planting seeds (weeks 1 & 2)

  • Grow strawberry plants, or whatever takes your fancy from the garden center. Talk about what plants need to grow & encourage your child to care for their plant.

  • There are instructions and ideas for craft activities using pressed, dried flowers. We’d love to see your creations.

  • Spend some time looking at different leaves or flowers (a magnifying glass may help generate extra interest). What are the similarities and differences between two flowers? Which has most petals? Do they attract bees or flies? Can you draw and label any of them? Take some pictures to share in class.
  • Make a nature collection in an egg box – put cotton wool in each section and find something from the outdoors to put into each section e.g. leaves, stones, feathers.

Mini-beast and animal activities

  • Explore your own garden, or visit the park. What wildlife can you find? Could you take pictures or keep a tally of what you come across?
  • Make a mini-beast or animal mask.
  • Could you make a home for a frog, or other animal? What kind of environment do they like? What do you need to provide them with? Take photos so we can share.
  • Design your own mini-beast. Which beasts have you combined?

  • Could you paint a rock and create an animal? Lots of examples online.

 

The following activities might help rustle up some extra excitement about our farm visit. .

  • We will definitely be singing I’m a Dingle, Dangle Scarecrow this term. Could you draw your own scarecrow or other device which to keep birds off crops.
  • We will also sing Old MacDonald had a farm. Could you draw Old MacDonald or his farm?
  • Cook eggs – compare hard boiled with soft boiled with raw. Discuss differences.
  • Bake some bread (packet mixes from Aldi, just add water & oil). Where do all the ingredients come from? What is happening?
  • Bake cakes. Where do all the ingredients come from? What is happening?
  • Make your own farm. You could cut out animals from magazines or the internet, or make them from cotton wool and fabric. Talk about shapes that you use for wheels, buildings, fields and fences.

Any painted pictures of animals will be added to our ‘class’ farm. This website has loads of other resources too, lots of games, colouring sheets and ideas for a rainy day or long car journey. 

  • Make collages out of natural materials collected on farm visit or rural walk.
  • Sequence photos of park visit or time spent in the countryside. Develop vocabulary based around time (before, after, first we did…, next we…)

Other activities we’d like you to consider are:

  • Can you use alliteration to describe the fruit he eats? (e.g. lovely lollipops, scrumptious strawberries). Draw pictures and write them down.
  • Think of a healthy and/or unhealthy meal for another hungry caterpillar. Draw a picture and write the food names.
  • Create another collage showing the beautiful butterfly.
  • Look at photographs of butterflies and paint your own. You could try folding a piece of paper in half and painting one half of a butterfly on one side. Then fold the paper over, press it down and open it out to reveal the full butterfly.
  • Cut a hole out of a piece of paper and create a picture around it. What could the hole represent? A window in a beautiful building? A missing piece of a puzzle? A gigantic hole in the ground?
  • Here are some good words to describe caterpillars: Green, Yellow, Orange, Spiky, Fluffy, Dotty, Wriggly, Curly, Bendy. Think of your favourite animal or a pet. Which words can you think of to describe it? Have a go at writing them down.
  • The Very Hungry Caterpillar loves to eat fruit. His favourites are apples, pears, plums, strawberries and oranges. Mix these fruits together to make a smoothie or pudding. Can you give your creation a name? Have a go at designing a label for a bottle of your smoothie.
